Welcome to the Writing Programs Office
The Writing Programs Office (WPO) administers the department's undergraduate writing courses (English 104, 203, 210, 241 and 301) and supervises graduate assistants and lecturers teaching these courses. We are responsible for the quality of teaching in these courses and student access to them. Our goals are two-fold:
- to ensure the quality of undergraduate writing courses and
- to prepare departmental graduate assistants for professions as writers, teachers, and editors.
For undergraduate students taking English 104, 203, 210, 241 and 301, we offer:
- Information (print and electronic) about writing courses and course substitutions
- Forces for Technical Writing sections (seniors only)
- Grade appeals
- Course syllabi
- Electronic resources to supplement writing courses
- Advising for the Professional Writing Certificate and the Society for Technical Communication
Because writing courses require student participation and teacher evaluation, we do not permit audits.
For graduate assistants and lecturers, we provide:
- Extensive professional development program, including pedagogy and technology workshops, and mentoring
- Print and electronic teaching resources, including course syllabi, and teaching resources
- Mediation services
- Assistance with book orders
- Annual book fair for publishers to showcase new resources
- Teaching awards
