Program Honors in English

Working in concert with the University Honors Programs, the Department provides highly motivated majors with overall GPAs of 3.5 or higher the opportunity of selecting from twenty to thirty Honors sections per academic year.  Staffed by excellent faculty in class sizes restricted to twenty–five or fewer, students may do advanced work and research in special areas.  Those who complete nine hours of Honors course work may qualify for the Honors Fellow Program and undertake a year-long independent study, an Honors Thesis, under the mentorship of an English faculty member.

Most Fellows compete in the University-wide Student Research Week presentation and Poster Competition held every March for cash awards and prizes such as laptop computers.  English often attracts enough participants annually to qualify for its own section in the humanities division.

Those completing the twenty-one to twenty-four distributed Honors hours required for Program Honors in English receive transcript recognition.  Students either include six hours as an Honors Fellow or take an Honors senior seminar and an Honors directed individual study as part of their program.
