This schedule indicates the relative amounts of time we will be spending on each play. However, our actual pace will be determined to some extent by class discussion and time spent on background lectures. I reserve the right to reschedule assignments to meet class needs.

Note that on rare occasions regular class may be cancelled during the semester because of my other professional obligations. Instead, an alternate assignment will be made in such instances, including film assignments in the Library Annex media center.

TEXTS & OTHER MATERIALS:

The Norton Shakespeare, ed. Greenblatt et al. 1997.

[You may use another college text with scholarly introductions and annotations; however, it is important that you read the Norton text of at least RII, Lear, and Tempest because there are variant readings with which you must be familiar]

The Bedford Companion to Shakespeare, Russ McDonald, 2000.

[optional but very strongly recommended]

Electronic materials: non-commercial web sites related to the study of Shakespeare’s plays (many of these are accessible from my web page); video and audio tapes of Shakespeare’s plays, especially those by the BBC, available at the EDMS in Evans Library Annex, 4th floor.

REQUIREMENTS & GRADING:

two hour exams @ 30% each.......................................................60%

final exam (comprehensive take-home).....................................30%

attendance, quizzes, or other assignments...................................10%

Hour exams will consist of a variety of short answers (in various formats including quotations from the plays, terms to be identified, etc.) and essays covering the plays, lectures, and introductory materials in your text.

Exams must be taken/submitted when scheduled. Exceptions will be granted only with advance notice and for compelling, documentable, and university-recognized reasons.

N.B. Consistent and regular attendance is taken for granted. University regulations will be observed: excessive unexcused absences (more than 3) will cause your final grade to be penalized as much as 10%. Participation indicates constructive contribution to class discussion and prompt fulfillment of class assignments and requirements. There may be occasional unannounced quizzes on assigned reading during the semester.
