BLACK BRITISH LITERATURE - THE LUCINDA ROY PAGE
A Special Project by Laura Dunn

While doing research for a class project for a senior English/Africana Studies seminar at Texas A & M University, I had the incredible opportunity of interviewing author, poet, and painter, Lucinda Roy. With numerous volumes of poetry and two novels, Hotel Alleluia and Lady Moses published, Lucinda Roy explored with me some prevalent themes in her works. Focusing primarily on her first novel, Lady Moses, Roy lends great insight into her creative fiction and poetry. The results of our discussion reveal not only the vastly complex issues in contemporary Black British literature, but draw attention to the novel's common thread of humanity in all peoples. I was particularly struck not only by her brilliant wit and overwhelming intellect, but her genuinely magnanimous character and remarkably humble disposition.
