Sure Fire

By Mary Winters

A five-year-old says "Wow me."
And you do.

It's not so hard at that age:
you snatch up one of those tiny gourds
that looks like a pumpkin.
Scoop out the inside with a teaspoon.
Cut the grin, etc. with a small nail file.
Go for broke -- add a goatee.
Light the tip of a candle inside:
the happiest little demon on earth.

The girl's watching cartoons, bored.
Whisk it before her.
